Instagram post specifications & sizes
Use this page as your reference for image and video requirements across Instagram post types. Getting sizes right before you upload saves time and avoids automatic cropping.

Recommended dimensions:
| Format | Dimensions | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Tall portrait | 1080 × 1440px | 3:4 |
| Standard portrait | 1080 × 1350px | 4:5 |
| Square | 1080 × 1080px | 1:1 |
| Landscape | 1080 × 566px | 1.91:1 |
Tall portrait (3:4) is now supported. At 1080 × 1440px, this gives you more vertical screen space on mobile. Note that tall portrait is available for single image and video posts — it is not supported in carousels.
Images outside the supported aspect ratio range will be automatically cropped or resized by Instagram. You'll see a notification in Sked if your image exceeds these limits.
Carousels and mixed image sizes
Instagram sets the aspect ratio for an entire carousel based on the first image or video in the sequence. All subsequent slides are centre-cropped to match — you can't mix aspect ratios within a single carousel.
| First slide ratio | What happens to the rest |
|---|---|
| 1:1 (square) | All slides cropped to square |
| 4:5 (portrait) | All slides cropped to portrait |
| 1.91:1 (landscape) | All slides cropped to landscape |
To avoid unexpected cropping, decide on your ratio before building the carousel and keep all slides consistent. Square (1:1) is the safest choice when working with mixed content, as it's the most forgiving crop across different image compositions.
Note that tall portrait (3:4 / 1080 × 1440px) is not supported in carousels. The maximum portrait ratio for carousel slides is 4:5.
